This response by the Canadian government, and empathetic Canadians including Green Party leader Elizabeth May, serves the same credential-burnishing as maintaining pets in the lap of luxury.
It is hypocrisy twice over. Not only have Canadians done nothing to reduce the likelihood that Omar Khadrs will occur in the future, this remedy makes future travesties more likely. There is nothing wrong with making amends. There is a great deal wrong with conflating making amends with claims that the circumstances causing the harms no longer exist.
