Hard to argue against President Obama's  logic.

However I think the present refugee crisis reflects two processes that are being papered over with global empathic responses. The first involves the culpability of 1st World Nations for the economic and political circumstances spawning global violence and desperation.

The second involves the culpability of 1st World Nations in compassionate refugee projects.  These undertakings paper over complicities in what is going on.  They also seduce beleaguered populations into tolerating regressive economic and political proceedings. They do not engage these problems because they hope to take advantage of them sufficiently to be able to afford to emigrate to more auspicious climes

If people being abused understood that they had  no avenue of egress except figuring out connections between the way they live and inequitable proceedings this would nurture circumstances wherein their torments could be repaired from the bottom up.
